Background of the project
Maternal and child mortality reduction remains a key priority of the Government of Georgia. Despite the existence of the consolidated evidence of what works to improve maternal and child health (MCH), the knowledge-implementation gap for measurable reductions in preventable maternal, fatal and neonatal mortality appears to be unfilled across the Continuum of Care (CoC). In response to the growing global concern to end preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths, the Government of Georgia approved the National Maternal and Newborn Health Strategy 2017-2030 to improve interventions aimed at keeping mothers and babies healthy. The development and introduction of a MCH handbook is included in the strategy`s implementation plan, with the goal of reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths to zero by 2030 through ensuring access to appropriate education and quality services.
As an effective step towards improving the coverage and quality of CoC in Georgia, the technical cooperation project "Project for improving the quality of continuum of care for mothers and children through the introduction of MCH handbook" will be implemented by close collaboration of the Government of Georgia and Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA.
This is a 3-year project starting in January 2024. The project completed training in Japan for Georgian delegates, situation analysis and the development of the MCH handbook. Currently, organizing training and baseline surveys for pilot implementation are ongoing.
