Student Essay Competition in International Humanitarian Law

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Georgia is delighted to announce a student essay competition in International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The aim of the competition is to increase the interest of Georgian students in IHL, promote high-quality academic research, and foster the respect for and implementation of the rules of IHL.

Essay Topics

Participants are required to select one of the following topics:

** The Importance of the Ban on Anti-Personnel Mines and Cluster Munitions: Legal Perspectives and Humanitarian Benefits
** The Role of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance in Addressing Issues Related to Missing People and Their Families
** Prisoners of War and Civilian Internees: Contemporary Challenges in Ensuring Compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL) Standards
** The Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Contemporary Warfare: A Legal Perspective on the Protection of Civilian Population

Eligibility Criteria

** The competition is open to all undergraduate and master`s level students enrolled in law or international law programs at accredited universities in Georgia. Having an active student status from an accredited Georgian University is a precondition for receiving the prize.
** Essays must be written in Georgian, typed, and comply with academic citation standards accepted at Georgian Universities. The common rule of citation must be respected. Although a particular citation or bibliographic style is not required, it is important that an author is consistent in proper use of footnotes in citation and/or referencing.
** Essay should be between 2000 to 3000 words (including footnotes, excluding bibliography), formatted in Sylfaen font, size 11, with 1, 15 line spacing.
** Name, surname, faculty, university, and study year of the author should be indicated on the front page.
** An author must expressly acknowledge at the end of the paper that submitted paper is written solely by him/her and there is no plagiarism. Only individual work is accepted. Identified cases of plagiarism will be dismissed. Please note that all submissions must be the original work of the student. Essays generated or significantly assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT or similar platforms, are strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification.

Assessment Criteria

Essays will be evaluated based on their depth of research, relevance, structure, degree of insight and independent analysis, legal argumentation, and logical reasoning.

Prizes

I place: 1 500 GEL
II place: 800 GEL
III place: 500 GEL

Participants will receive copies of the Geneva Conventions and/or other IHL literature.

Submission format and deadline

The deadline for essay submission is May 20, 2026.
